He co-founded the Subway fast food restaurant chain. Then he earned master’s as well as doctoral degrees in physics at Columbia University. In 2008, Bowdoin College granted him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. While employed as a nuclear physicist for a number of businesses from 1957 to 1978, Buck loaned associate and family pal Fred De Luca $1,000 in 1965 and suggested him to start a sandwich shop to help him pay for school at the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Collectively Buck and De Luca formed Doctor’s Associates to manage operations of the eateries as the franchise enlarged. Though neither the first nor the second eateries were financial successes, they continued to enlarge their operations. By 1973, they’d 16 locations throughout Connecticut and, in 1974, they started franchising out the eateries. Additionally they introduced Subway’s present symbol and changed the name of the business from what was then “Pete’s Subway” to “Subway Sandwiches”. Among Buck’s philanthropic works, he contributed the Carmen Lucia ruby to the stone set in the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History and gave a grant to Bowdoin College in 2009 that finished its capital effort. As a result, the school’s new fitness center bears his name.
