Terence Michael Joseph “Geezer” Butler (created 17 July 1949 in Birmingham, England) is an English musician and songwriter. He’s also recorded with Heaven & Hell, GZR, and Ozzy Osbourne. Butler grew up within an working class Irish Catholic family and was greatly affected by the writing of Aleister Crowley as a teen. Butler formed his first group, Rare Breed, in the fall of 1967, with John “Ozzy” Osbourne shortly joining as lead vocalist. Butler dated a woman who dwelt near Tony Iommi, and Iommi’s first memories of Butler called for seeing him walking past his house in Birmingham fairly frequently to see her. Afterwards, Iommi and Butler became acquainted when their groups played in a closeby club. They renamed their group World, but after getting a group in the small time English circuit using similar name, shortly embraced Black Sabbath in early 1969. When Sabbath was formed, Iommi made it clear he wouldn’t need to play with a different guitarist, so Butler moved to bass guitar. Iommi described Butler as being “from a different planet” in the group’s early days; he took LSD, wore Indian hippie dresses, and was quite peaceful. In the time Black Sabbath was formed, Butler was studying to eventually become an accountant, which training resulted in him handling the group’s financing in the first days. Butler briefly left Black Sabbath through the recording of the 1980 album Heaven and Hell. He again left the group in 1984 after touring in support of the 1983 album, Born Again. In 1988 he joined his former Sabbath bandmate Osbourne to be a part of the No Rest for the Wicked World Tour. Butler rejoined Black Sabbath in 1991 for the reunion of the Mob Rules lineup, but again leave the group subsequent to the Cross Purposes tour in 1994.
