Liberty DeVitto (created August 8, 1950) is an American rock drummer. He’s best known as the drummer for Billy Joel, but in addition has played together with the NYC Hit Squad and is a session drummer on records of other artists.
DeVitto was born in NYC, of Italian roots, where his dad was a police officer in the New York Police Department. In an internet interview, DeVitto describes how Joel’s classic late ’70s-early 80s group first came together: Billy and I used to play the exact same nightclub in Plainview, Long Island, called “My House.” He was 17 and in a group called The Hassles and I was 16 and in a group known as The Newest Rock Workshop. We’d see each other play and recognize each other in passing. In 1974, he was living in La and had already released Piano Guy and Streetlife Serenade. He used studio musicians for the record and various men out on the way. I had been playing in a group called Topper with Doug Stegmeyer and he got the show to play bass guitar with Billy on the “Streetlife” tour. He told Doug that he wished to move back to Nyc and locate a long-term group he could record and tour with on a regular basis. Doug urged me because Billy was searching for a New York-kind drummer, competitive and hard hitting, as well as the remainder is history. After working with Billy Joel for 30 years, DeVitto was released from drumming responsibilities for the 2006 Billy Joel tour for an unknown reason. As much as that point, he’d the longest jogging tenure in Joel’s group, beginning with all the record of 1976’s Turnstiles. He now supports Mapex drums, pedals & hardware, Sabian cymbals, Evans drumheads, Latin Percussion and Promark drumsticks. He’s supported Tama Drums, Zildjian cymbals and Remo drumheads before.
