There are three types of service businesses: business-to-business, business-to-consumer and personal. Each requires a different type of business model, and each has its own unique risks and challenges. The success of a service business depends on how well it meets the needs of its target market, offers a competitive value proposition, and delivers quality customer experiences. The business model of a service business differs from a product company, and it is crucial that entrepreneurs understand the difference.

Business-to-business (B2B) services are services provided to other organizations in a trade. For example, a car manufacturer performs B2B transactions with wholesaler companies that supply it with the tires, rubber hoses and other materials needed to build its cars. These services are charged at a flat or hourly rate and help the organization operate more efficiently or reduce costs.

Some examples of business services include warehousing, transportation and logistics, data processing and storage, waste management, security services, insurance and accounting, and technology support and development. The last of these is particularly important because it provides a competitive advantage for a business and helps it save money and time by outsourcing its technological functions to third parties.
