Pernell Whitaker Biography

Whitaker was the lightweight silver medalist in the 1982 World Championships, followed by the gold medalist in the 1983 Pan American Games as well as the 1984 Olympics. Whitaker subsequently embarked on a professional career where he became world champion in four different weight divisions. For his accomplishments, he was named the 1989 Combatant of the year by “Ring Magazine”.

Whitaker can also be a former WBA Light Middleweight Champ, WBC Welterweight Champ, IBF Light Welterweight Champion, WBC, WBA & IBF Lightweight Champion and NABF Lightweight Champion. He’s universally heralded as among the best 5 lightweights ever.

After his retirement, Whitaker returned to the entire world of boxing as a trainer. Among his trained fighters are Zab Judah, Dorin Spivey, Joel Julio and Calvin Brock. On December 7, 2006, Whitaker was inducted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame, in his first year of qualification.

In June 2002, Whitaker was convicted of cocaine possession following a judge found he violated the conditions of an earlier sentence by overdosing on cocaine in March. While the decline of speed and agility shoved him into retirement, his familiarity with the ring and parts have led him to seek out up and coming fighters and train them to fight the way he did. His first combatant, Dorin Spivey, had several matches scheduled for 2006. Lately, he is been training heralded young possibility Joel Julio.
