1He made two separate guest appearances by phone to The Howard Stern Show, both before and after his release from prison, and both times became the unwitting victim of Stern guest Gilbert Gottfried. On his first appearance, he tried to tell a story about Joey Adams, but was interrupted constantly by Gottfried, asking him to repeat the story, blaming non-existent technical difficulties for not being able to hear him. They continued this pattern until Hirschfeld was cut off by the prison phone lines.Following his release, Hirschfeld called in again to the Stern show with Gottfried again appearing as a guest, this time to discuss his tips for avoiding divorce and plans for the World Trade Center. While explaining his views on divorce, he told a joke about a 10-year-old boy and his mother that he wrote in prison. Again, Stern and Gottfried requested that he repeat the joke several times in a row, again blaming fictitious technical problems.
