Don McLean Biography

Donald “Don” McLean (born October 2, 1945) is an American singer songwriter. He’s most renowned for the 1971 album “American Pie”, featuring the songs “American Pie” and “Vincent”. The tune popularized the saying “The Day the Music Died” in reference to the occasion. The tune was recorded on May 26, 1971, as well as a month after got its first radio airplay on New York’s WNEW FM and WPLJ FM to indicate the close of Fillmore East, the well-known Nyc concert hall. The single also topped the Billboard Easy Listening survey. Some stations played just part among the first split-sided single release. WCFL DJ Bob Dearborn unraveled the lyrics and first released his interpretation on January 7, 1972, eight days prior to the song reached No. 1 nationwide (see “Further reading” under American Pie). Numerous other interpretations, which collectively mostly converged on Dearborn’s presentation, immediately followed. McLean declined to say anything authoritative in regards to the lyrics until 1978. Since then McLean has said the lyrics can also be somewhat autobiographical and present an abstract story of his life in the mid-1950s until the time he composed the tune in the late 1960s.
